Frequently Asked Questions

Joining a league

What type of leagues are there? . . .

There are 4 leagues to choose from Mixed Singles, Mixed Doubles, Ladies Doubles and Men's Doubles.

Does it cost to join a league? . . .

Yes. Each league costs £12 per person, per season.

Is there a restriction on the number of leagues I can join? . . .

Apart from gender restrictions, i.e. men cannot join the ladies doubles league and vice versa, there are no restrictions. You are welcome to join as many leagues as you desire, just be aware that you're expected to play all players once and this must be done within the 3 month timeframe. It may be difficult to do this if you play in all leagues at once.

I don't know many people at the club, does that matter? . . .

The leagues are a great way to meet new people that play to a similar level as you. It doesn't matter if you don't know them, all contact details are available via the Players page and once you're out on court, we're confident it'll be the first of many matches, not to mention another familiar face around the club.

I don't have a doubles partner, can I still sign up for a doubles league? . . .

You will need to find a partner before signing up but fear not, if you contact us we'll do our best to help team you up!

How do I join a league? . . .

Simply click the sign up link in the main navigation at the top or by clicking here

Why have I been placed in this division, I should be [higher/lower]? . . .

Where possible we like to keep each division to a maximum of 8 players. New entrants are placed in a division based on the rating they supplied upon signing up and with careful consideration from the coaches. Unfortunately, it isn't always possible to please everyone which will mean, occasionally, players may land in a division slightly above or below their ability.

Players that have struggled in any given season may drop down a division next season. Similarly, players that have breezed through their matches may get promoted. We anticipate that, using this method, you will quickly end up in a division suitable to your standard.

If you have any concerns, please contact us and we'll be more than happy to help.

Playing matches

How do I challenge another player? . . .

The contact details of all players are listed on the Players page (you will need the password to access this area). Simply reach out to the other players in your division and schedule some court time that will suit both sides.

No-one is responding to my match requests, what should I do? . . .

We recommend creating a WhatsApp group and inviting the other players in your division. This will help everyone communicate as a group. If you're not having any luck as a group, try emailing or texting opponents indivdually. Provide a few dates & times and offer to book the court. If you're really struggling, please contact us and we'll do what we can to help.

Who should provide the tennis balls? . . .

It is highly recommended that both players/teams bring:

1) A new tin of balls
2) Some used balls in good condition, and
3) £2

This will cover every eventuality.

If both players have a new tin of balls, open and play with one set. The winner of the match should take the un-opened tin, the loser should take the opened tin.

If only one player/team has a new tin, it is their decision whether to open it or not. If the used balls on offer aren't up to standard the player/team with the new tin are entitled to claim £2 (and should keep the balls post-match.)

If neither side has a new tin, the players must work it out for themselves.

I've forgotten the password for the players directory page :( . . .

The password can be found on the introduction email sent out prior to the start of every season (usually entitled "HPTL Season is live!"). If you no longer have this email, please contact us and we'll provide the password again.

I'm not able to commit to all of my matches, does this matter? . . .

No. Whilst we do want to see as many matches played as possible, there are no penalties for missing matches. Do bear in mind however, that the fewer matches you play, the higher the risk for finishing at the bottom of your division which could mean relegation.

Reporting scores

Who should submit a match result? . . .

The winner of the match should submit the match result.

How do I submit a match result? . . .

Results should be reported on the website. To do so, simply click the 'Submit Result' button beneath the league table on your division page.

I've submitted my match result but the league table hasn't updated :( . . .

Don't worry. It can take up to 48 hours for the scores to update on site pending verification from the HPTL admin fairies.

Reporting a problem

There is an error with my position in the league table. What should I do? . . .

Don't panic. This is likely down to human error and can be fixed quickly. Simply contact us and we'll correct the mistake as soon as possible.

I've found a mistake on the website, who should I tell? . . .

Simply contact us with a detailed description of the error and we'll fix it as quickly as possible.

Troubleshooting

I can't access the league tables. What should I do? . . .

If there is a 'no entry' symbol (⛔) next to a league or division, this means it is temporarily locked whilst being populated. Once the season commences and the league tables are ready to view, you will notice a green tick (✅) next to a league/division. An email will be sent around alerting you the leagues going live. If you're still having porblems, please contact us.

The password can be found on the introduction email sent out prior to the start of every season (usually entitled "HPTL Season is live!"). If you no longer have this email, please contact us and we'll provide the password again.
